The Importance of a good mattress

Never underestimate the importance of a good mattress.

This month, we’ve teamed up with Duvalay and the Hilary Devey Collection to explore why you should consider giving your mattresses a much-needed MOT.

It is no secret that a comfortable bed is essential for a quality night’s sleep. Remember the last time you had a bad night’s sleep and now imagine the dissatisfaction of a sleep-deprived guest – it is definitely not something you want to deal with.

While you won’t be able to cater for every guest tastes that walks through your door; some will like soft, others firm, or have a preference for memory foam over pocket-spring, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t give your current mattresses a MOT once in a while.

Advice from the Sleep Council is that you should look to replace your mattresses every seven to eight years because by this time it will have lost much of its original comfort and support. It’s also true that the average human sheds over a pound of skin a year, while also losing around half a pint of moisture each night so you can soon imagine why they need changing regularly.

With the month of May now in full swing, it is the perfect time to start thinking about giving your beds a much-needed MOT. Nicer weather and warmer days give ample opportunity to tackle home projects, and your mattresses should be top of the list.

If you are a little unsure where to start, these handy questions from the Sleep Council are a great starting point:

  1.   Is your bed more than 7-8 years old?
  2.   Are you waking up more frequently unrefreshed and aching?
  3.   Do you disturb your partner or are you disturbed by them when changing sleep positions?
  4.   Does it look used or worn?
  5.   Does it feel lumpy?
  6.   Is it sagging – do you and your partner roll towards each other unintentionally in the middle of the night?
  7.   Are the base, legs or castors lumpy, worn or wobbly?
  8.   Would it be embarrassing if neighbours saw it without its covers?

If you answered yes to more than half these questions, then it is probably time to start shopping around. So what should you look for?

Support and comfort levels should be the top of the list, after all, many of your customers will judge you on the quality of their night’s sleep when they are with you. Opt for a medium feel as it will appeal to the widest audience.

Quality is also something to consider too, as you want it to stand up to excessive use by a variety of people of all different ages, heights and weight. We recommend looking at handmade over mass-produced. Handmade mattresses offer features such as genuine hand-side stitched borders and hand-tufting, all of which help it to keep its shape and bounce.

The Hilary Devey Collection, by BBC Dragons’ Den star and leading entrepreneur Hilary Devey, offers those suffering from the seven-year itch a great starting point. Lovingly handmade in Yorkshire, the collection uses only the finest materials of wool, silk, cotton and cashmere combined with the latest in innovation techniques.

With five mattresses in the collection, the Diamond remains the best-selling and was voted number one by The Independent in a roundup. It has popular features including a cotton infused summer side, and a wool-heavy winter side to provide a good night’s sleep all year round. With over 2000 individually nested pocket springs, The Diamond mattress provides plenty of support and comfort.

Also in the collection is the Diamond-Luxe and Emerald, both of which are made using generous layers of cotton, wool, cashmere and silk. Both use the latest in manufacturing innovation for a much more breathable mattress, as well as individual pocket-springs to reduce partner disturbance.

All mattresses are available in four sizes: single, double, king and super king.
